our startups leveraging technology to boost Agricultural production in Ghana
WAN-Hive Ghana, a female-focused Innovation space in Sunyani hosts the second edition of its Startup Summit on August 31, 2022, under the theme “Digitizing Agriculture for Sustainable Business Development and Job Creation in Sunyani”.
The Sunyani North Startup Summit is an event that commemorates the Six weeks of intensive Web App development training undertaken by WAN-Hive Ghana under the Pathway to Sustainable Employment (PaSE) program in partnership with Ghana Tech Lab. The program supported by Mastercard Foundation, Young Africa Works, World Bank, and the Ministry of Communications seeks to create sustainable employment opportunities for young people in Ghana through technology.
The Startup Summit is an excellent opportunity for startups to be propelled to the next level, through constructive business development and investor-readiness feedback to engender possible funding from the community of local investors.
The event commenced with a welcome address from the Chief Executive Officer of WAN-Hive Ghana, Ms. Janat Issifu who welcomed all participants, including investors, entrepreneurs, public service Personnel, startups, students, and others. She explained the objective of the PaSE program while touching on the numerous opportunities created for young women across the country. She also mentioned some success stories, the hub has achieved from the maiden edition. The C.E.O once again assured participants that WAN-Hive Ghana is poised to change the status-quo and equip young women with all relevant skills and mentorship they need to establish their own businesses in Tech. She added that WAN-Hive’s doors are always open for women and the hub is working very hard to bring more opportunities to the ladies in the Bono Region.
Dr. Appiahene Peter, the C.E.O of CY Technologies Ghana who is also the Head of the Department for Computer Science and Informatics Department at the University of Energy and Natural Resources gave keynote remarks and encouraged the young ladies in Sunyani to take advantage of Web applications in growing and sustaining their businesses. He explicitly explained that in the 21st Century, there are lots of opportunities available for young women in the technology industry and they should take advantage of this. He added no business can strive without taking advantage of technology specifically Web App Applications. He entreated the Youth to engage in research and several Consultations to help them understand their preferred industries before fully venturing into them to avoid unforeseen losses.
Miss. Felicia Ajabea Boadu from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture encourages the startup for coming up with tech ideas to help the agricultural sector. She said the Ministry is always ready to support tech. start-up and thank WAN-HIVE Ghana for supporting the ladies.
Trainees in their groups pitched their innovations to a panel of judges, local investors, innovators, business leaders, the local community, and other distinguished guests
Team “DUAPA GH” developed a Web Application to provide healthy seedlings to farmers.
Team “FRESH PICK” developed a Web Application to connect fruit sellers and customers.
Team “CROP APP” developed a Web Application to sell quality and affordable farm tools and fertilizers to farmers.
Team “AGRIMARKET” developed a Web Application to solve the priding of farm produce.
After a tough competition, team AGRIMARKET emerged winner, Team CROP APP as the first runner-up, and Team FRESH PICK as the second runner-up.
